A lot of anime pictures have a cosplay feel to them. The only thing that I see that keeps this from typically deserving the tag is the sweetheart neckline and the length of the dress. Honestly, I hate that the tag could be used innappropriately, but I hate also it loses its usefulness and probably annoys a lot of people. It used to be that I ignored pictures such as these having the tag, but then people started to point out that it isn't spot on lolita. I'd like to hear other opinions!

I thought that very early into the game. It's even more complicated now since everyone has a thing about it either way. Sucks. I was wondering, would it be better off if everything that looked lolita-esque (like this for example) was tagged lolita? That's how it was in the beginning. I think this would make people happier.

However, despite my lack of knowledge, I think that for most users who cared to find lolita fashion images, a tag that was for things that -look- lolita would be better. I mean, most people don't know that much about lolita fashion, but there are a lot who still think it's a cute fashion and would appreciate looking for images of it.
I think tagging is supposed to be somewhat simple, not complex, but maybe it would be better to hear from the users who -are- fans of the fashion and see if they appreciate it being tagged so loosely.

I agree with Niney. A lot of what I'd consider "lolita", I keep hearing you guys saying it's not because the "skirt is too short", or "it looks like cosplay." I just think the concept of the fashion looks pretty cute, I'm not interested enough in all the details ^^; I think the tag should give the basic concept, not be a guide to the fashion.
As someone who's always had a thing for the fashion, even though I'm oblivious to its details, it really does bring me down everytime a nagging comment about the tag is made (and I don't blame you, you're fans and you know what you're talking about). I just don't think that's how we should work with the tag.

I agree. Coren, kiba_inuzuka_is_mine, and I have been the only that I've witnessed talking about the fashion extensively. I've been a lolita fashion enthusiast for 6 years now. I absolutely love it when the tagging picks up the authentic thing, but I also love this site. I think the users would be happier if it picked up not only lolita, but lolita-esque images. I mean if I wanted to find something that was spot on lolita, I could just pick through what is tagged. This site caters to people interested in anime in particular, not fashion. I think it'd be better as a general tag and not need all this complexity. I've pointed out before that the shortness of the skirt should not make the lolita tag void. Honestly, it's the shape of the dress more than anything that defines what's lolita. I have tagged lolita images that looked like cosplay. I don't think that was the issue. In this case, it's that her dress is really almost floor lengthed and her boobs are popping out of the dress due to the sweetheart neckline. I still honestly feel this would deserve the tag if we had a more sufficient way of tagging it like appealing to the masses that come here- anime fans.

Well, it was more of an example ^^ You guys point out a lot of things, actually. And I'm sure you know what you're talking about - at least a lot more than me, or a good majority of the users.

We do, I completely agree. The nature of the tag has changed since people have been commenting on what is and what is not lolita, so as a tagger I also changed what I've considered relevant to the tag. That's why I'm bringing up this discussion though. My personal opinion is that it should be changed to what's better for the users. I was just wondering if anybody agreed. Maybe I should have brought this to the forums though.
Edit: Since no one has contributed and it still holds true that this is a site that is anime-oriented and not fashion oriented I'm going to add the tag.
