See you got a Canon 40D. Nice! ^^
I just got a 450D a bit ago, still need to learn how to use it well too.
For making figure shoots, these are nice tutorial for DIY lighting:
- http://otakudan.com/2008/08/figure-phot ... al-20.html
- http://www.happysoda.com/archives/88
Another tip for steady shots if you have shaky hands (even with an IS lens), a tripod and remote control. I'll probably purchase those soon.
Something most buddies with such cameras advised me is to get a lens filter. Even though many forums debate the use and cost of one, it's worth it even just as protection for your lens in case you drop it. (A shattered 15$ lens filter isn't as bad as a shattered 100$-400$ lens.)
"The Digital Photography Book" 1 & 2 and "Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera" books are quite nice, a colleague bought them and they have handy do it yourself pages with detailed instructions how to make specific shots.
You can download scans of them first to check them out if you don't want to but the hardcopy right away.

Re: Woot! New Goodies!
Was at a anime convention yesterday and picked up some stuff.
They're posable...somewhat. Ikki can't lift his arms above his head and Shun is falling over so fast, it's hard to do a Rolling Defense. Oh well. They're cute anyway. <3 (Pink spandex whoo! <33)
I especially like the Code Geass bookmarks. That came with a strip of gum. Which tasted awful.
Ichigo Mashimaro 5, cuteness at it's best, and some kind of character description book about Di Gi Charat. Looked like fun.

Really nice loot indeed. I didn't get as much as you did, but I'm still really happy with my 2 Xuse Dakimakura and the Tinkle set + bed sheet that arrived recently.
I shall speak neither hurtful nor harsh word, but shall speak respectfully, even of my enemies, for temperate words may turn aside anger.

Re: Woot! New Goodies!
Just so you know Wrex, I'd put that Mikuru in a safe and lock that safe up in a bigger safe...Lily wants it so bad she'd probably do almost anything
[Signature space. $10]
