Creating Artist Tags

This page is a guide for team members when creating Artist tags.

Basics

• Follow this link to Create a New Tag. TIP: It is often better to bookmark this because the Tags page (where the link is) loads slowly.
• Ensure the Type is set to 'Artist Tag'. If this is created wrongly, you can edit the tag to change it.
• The Title box does not require quotation marks; they are added automatically around the name when it is created.
• In the description box, add the original artist name (in the original language), followed by a dividing line (|) and a full link to a personal website. Please do not shorten it to the Pixiv ID, as this is not as easily followed. The description box has a character limit, so add the most relevant links; the rest can go on the Artist's Wiki page.
• Artist names should be romanized as is explained below.
• When the artist uses various names, you can alias important ones to the primary tag. To make an alias of the Artist, create a new tag to use as the secondary tag and add the name of the primary tag to Alias Of.

Pixiv Artists

• If an artist's Pixiv name appears as something similar to 'かねだ＠あ食満しておめでとう。' it is only the part before the @ that is their name, which in this case is 'かねだ', which can then be translated to 'Kaneda'.
• Artists that have accounts on Pixiv now have their Pixiv IDs aliased to their artist tags, in the format "Pixiv 00000". Remember to capitalise the 'P' in Pixiv, and add the link to the description of the Pixiv number tag.

Tag Conflicts

When two artists use the same primary name, they need to be distinguished with brackets after their name. This can be the circle name, artist's personal website name or their Pixiv ID if the other two are not available. Only when none of these are available should other things be used.

Translating Artist Names

Japanese, Chinese and Korean names should be correctly romanized, not fully translated into English words, unless the artist does so themselves.

Tagging Team members should try to memorise Hiragana and Katakana to the best of their ability, as it will not only help them to translate, but to recognise translation mistakes, with regular use. This includes things like mixing up similar Japanese characters.

Useful tools for romanization have been listed below. Although they can be helpful, they are not fully reliable, and have an especially hard time with Kanji.

If the artist's name uses symbols, they can be copied to the Shuu artist name and do not require translation.

Common Errors

• ヅ/づ, ヂ/ぢ should be Zu and Ji respectively, using Hepburn Romanization, not "Du" and "Di", which is Nihon-Shiki Romanization.
• 月: It's Tsuki, or Zuki. Gatsu is a common reading, but not for Japanese names.
• 夜: Yoru. Many artists prefer "ya".

Ask in the Tagging Team forums here. If it's a report made by someone else, you can just leave it for a member who can translate it.

Messaging Artists

This has been done in the past, though I am unsure of how regularly this occurs now.

If you have no clue how a Pixiv artist's name is supposed to be read, you can (if you have a Pixiv account) send them a PM by clicking on the envelope icon on their profile.

"[Artist]さんの名前の読み方は何ですか？" = "How is [Artist]-san's name pronounced?".

Romanization Tools

CAUTION

• They don't provide alternate readings, e.g. 紅, which means "red", has 5 different readings: Kurenai, Kou, Ku, Beni and Mochi. Romaji.org only gives you "Kurenai".
• Different combinations of Kanji will break the translation, e.g. 華月 is usually read as "hana gatsu". Romaji.org will give you the same reading, but many artists prefer "Kazuki" instead.
• "バージニア*コンプレックス" google language tool will translate it correctly, but romaji.org will not.
• Romaji.org use Nihon-shiki romanization, which isn't suitable for an "English-speaking community"; on E-Shuushuu, we use Hepburn romanization, so it must be changed.
• Romaji.org will ignore the iteration mark, 々, which will cause the translation to become incomplete.

Japanese Romanizers

http://www.romaji.org/ is the easiest to use, but you should note it's not very good with kanji (hiragana/katakana are done well though). If you ever feel like Romanji.org isn't giving you a very good result (this often happens with complex kanji, and you can tell it's likely to be wrong if it gives you a name like, "Goto maka kono koto jisa urujesai". That's just long and unlikely.

http://en.wiktionary.org/ - Has some names, but mostly useful for finding readings of kanji and hanzi.

http://kanji.reader.bz/ - Simple interface, but will only give you one reading.

http://translate.google.com/ - Click the "Read phonetically" option

Wiki Entries

Along with the artist tag, it's be nice if you could create a wiki entry for the artist! This currently requires access to the wiki of course.

To create the page, follow the link on the newly created Artist tag, right after 'Shuu Wiki:'. This links directly to the newly-created artist name on the wiki. Ignore the 'Create Artist Wiki Page' button.

A red link should appear stating that the page does not exist; click it to begin creating it! The template to copy to the page, and fill in, is here, along with further instructions.
