This pages aims at providing a quick reference on some tag which people usually have problem with. This only apply to image uploading, not searching. For more detail, see the tags pages.

^_^

Intended with characters with their eyes closed upward and smiling or not. Like: ^_^. Not like: v_v. You can complete it with "happy" or "smile" or ":3" Anony: Hmmm, I think this tag and ":3" could be removed now. Causes too much confusion ^^;

Merun: I don't see much confusion with "^_^". It's correctly applied as is ":3". The problem is people are implying that it's also a "happy" "smile" tag at the same time. Well, purpose of this page is to clear confusion.

Yatchen: Does anyone even search these tags?

Merun: You want the whole system to collapse because no use the search by theme tag? xD I guess statistic should be available

Yatchen: I'm just saying, I use a lot of the theme tags to search, whether for fun or for work, but I don't think I've ever used these. XD

:3

For characters with their mouths in the "3" shape, like a cat.

4koma

For four panel manga.

Ahoge

An intentional piece of hair that sticks up. Usually in the front or back of the head.

Albino

For characters with white hair and red eyes. Does not require the "white hair" tag.

Apron

Goes over the clothes, can be frilly, but can't be naked! It's not necessary to add if for "maid" and "waitress".

Barefoot

One barefoot is enough to be tagged. When there is stockings, sandals, or shoes, the tag shouldn't be applied. the tag does apply is the foot is partially but not completely covered by bandages.

Beach

It requires sand. It doesn't include the sea.

Birthday

For birthday celebrations, including cake, presents, etc. Not for simple images with "Happy Birthday" written on it.

Bloomer

Bloomer are sport clothing, not fluffy undergarment

Chinese dress

Not meant for Chinese pants/outfits. For dresses!

Cosplay

A real life person dressing up as an anime or manga character. Does not apply to anime characters dressing up as another anime character.

Couple

Two people who appear to be in love, are showing affection, etc. Does not apply if they are a couple in the series but it is not shown in the image. Does apply if it is shown in the image but is not true in the series.

Crossover

When a character is dressed as another character in a different anime, featured with a different character, portraying as another character, or it has an element of another series in another.

Curly Hair

Curly hair is not wavy hair. It should take the form of loops or drills.

Devil

Can be tagged as such if the character has some of these element: "wings" "horn" "pointy ears" It's the mix of these element that make a character devil. Devilish smiling is not enough.

Doll

You must be able to see their joints/doll parts. Dolls who are so within a serious should not have this tag unless you can tell they are dolls in the image.

Elf

What is an elf? except having "pointy ears"? (I agree. I don't see why we need both "elf" and "pointy ears". People only use "elf" for elves in context anyway.) ( TO BE MERGED WITH "pointy ears" ) (Yatchen approves of that)

Fan

Both for hand held fans and electronic fans.

Fang

For those pointy little teeth.

Family

For use when there is a group of people that make a family. (Yatchen doesn't think we need this tag) TO BE WORKED ON ( TO BE DELETED ( because it attracts the attention of those who doesn't want to delete any tag :D ) )

First, is twin a child tag of family? Then this tag is at the same time, doesn't rely and rely to the source. I just realized but... almost all Umineko pic should be tagged as such, but it's not easy to see how by the image. THere are case in which it's obvious, such as in Clannad. The problem is not what is tagged but how it's tagged. Sibling as per tag description is enough. However Couple != Family. They are complementary tag. So I suggest to to go of course, by what is depicted on the image, and maybe by character last name.

On a second opinion, I think it should only be visible..., not related to character last name.

I just don't see the point of the tag itself. -Yatchen

Flower

To be applied for whole flowers or flower petals that are not sakura. (VERIFY) ( Shouldn't the sakura tag be a child of Flower then? ) (Yatchen thinks so.)

Freckles

Natural point on the face. Not to be confused with blush line. ( Merun think that this tag should be deleted ) (Yatchen thinks it's too rarely used and agrees) (Fuwari will go ahead and disagree; it's unique enough to merit a tag, even if the vast majority of anime characters do not have freckles) ( Then Fuu-chan can enforce it because it's quite missused :p ) (see Tanline for long comment )

Gaming

Can be applied both when a person is playing a game or there is a game/game controller in the image.

Gothic

Gothic is not "lolita fashion". Gothic use rather dark cloth, without frill. Other prominent item is spiky bracelet or necklace and belt.

Group

For three or more people.

Hair Band

Not to be confused with "headdress" which have frills. A hair band is a simple accessory that hold the hair in place by tightening around the head. A ribbon might be tied on it for esthetic.

Happy

Not to be confused with "smile". It should be used with people having their mouth open, as in :D

Hime

The hime tag can be used for all girls showing sign of royalty, such as a crown or scepter.

Horns

Can also work for only one horn. May be applied for deer type antlers.

Ice

For ice in an image. Can be applied for Cirno's wings only if they appear as ice.

Jacket

Meant for long sleeves, not pullovers. You should be able to see something underneath it (unless the characters is wearing only a jacket and is a ghost :p but you get the idea ).

Long Kimono

A kimono not cut to the thigh/knee. If not visible, consider the sleeve which should be longer than the elbow. If still invisible, "long kimono" is the default tag to use.

Mahou Shoujo

For girls with magic girl appearance. Frilly clothing, wands, etc. Not for someone casting serious magic.

Maid

A servant, with a apron covering also the chest, contrary to the waitress. ( TO BE VERIFIED ) ( Merun approves )

Manga

For multiple paneled manga. (Needs to be verified where we should put things like 10komas) ( I guess it can either fall under this or a new tag to be determined ) ( Considering the parent/child tag relation, 5+ koma fall under the manga tag ) (Sounds fine to Yatchen then)

Monochrome

For images composed of various shades of only one color. Should not be added with the "manga" tag. ( TO BE VERIFIED: manga can be colored ) (I always disliked that stupid manga-monochrome rule...I don't see why we have it.) ( Monochrome and Manga are NOT EXCLUSIVE ; I don't even know where this rule came from) (Then let's abolish it, shall we? :P) ( APPROVED )

Odango

For hairbuns, one or two.

Onsen

Public baths, not household bathtubs.

Sakura

Cherry blossoms. Can be on tree or floating through the air.

School Mizugi

Often of dark blue, or white color, there might also be a name tag on the chest. The mizugi can also be split in two parts, and there is often a seam down the side.

Seifuku

Seifuku is a school uniform. It includes already the eventual "skirt" and "ribbon" tag if they are part of it. However, "jacket", "hat", and "tie" are not included and should be added when seen. If a seifuku is also a dress, both the "seifuku" and "dress" tags may be added. ( TO BE VERIFIED ) (Jacket is not related to seifuku...) ( I guess it's a problem of interpretation of other people ) (Well, change their interpretation.) ( Merun approves current guideline ) (Yatchen does as well)

Short Kimono

A kimono cut to the knee or elbow.

Suit

For formal images with males or females dressed up with slacks, blazer, and tie/bow tie. When containing a jacket or a tie with the suit, it still needs to be tagged.

Sweat

For multiple sweatdrops. Usually appears when it's hot or after physical activities.

Sweatdrop

A bead of sweat. It's used so as to represent emotions such as embarrassment, exasperation, confusion or shock.

Randoseru

School backpack used for primary school. (Merun think this tag should be deleted)(It's a very specific type of school bag but is quite common in anime images. It will stay.)( The name/word is not common; At the very least, it needs an alias though it's not easy to come up with one "school bag (elementary school)" "elementary school backpack" ) ("child's backpack"? There aren't really a lot of aliases that anyone would try typing in at random for this tag. -Yatchen)( well, at least one with "school bag(child backpack)" is needed since people usually use "school bag", so they would usually go first by "school bag" ) (I guess I just don't like the tags with parenthesis in them. It looks bulky and whatnot.)

Scenic

Image must be focused on the background rather than the girl. A majority of the image should be something other than the girl.

Smile

Not to be confused with "happy". Smile is usually closed mouth, having this shape :). Teeth can be visible.

Stars

Shining dot in the sky at night. Include also stars shaped object. ( TO BE VERIFIED ) (Yes, star shaped objects should be fine. More applicable than sky stars, really.)(APPROVED)

Tanline

Yes it exist. ( Considering it's less use than freckles, unknown, I think it should be deleted ) (Fuwari: Again, I'm not convinced a tag should be deleted just because it's not used often.) (The problem would be then to make it existence known if kept )(Anony: It should be kept. Just because a tag is seldom used does not mean it should be removed.) ( Merun: My main gripe with this tag and freckles is not the fact is not used too often, but mainly easily forgotten which is in fact, related. Also, while E-shuushuu caters to English speaker, it's not native English, and these word are quite, unknown (I needed a dictionary for Freckles ). I agree that adding these tag add effectiveness to these two. So, if kept, they need more exposure other than casual use on images. This page, when finished needs some good exposure, and also, I was thinking of adding some tag description to the top of the website where other advice are being displayed, otherwise, it's counter productive. ) (Adding it to the top might be a good idea...I don't think this tag should be deleted, regardless of its use. It does serve an effective purpose. Freckles just seems random. -Yatchen) (Fuwari: Er... both tanline and freckles are native English. That aside, I don't think these two are easily forgotten; just more that they're not often applicable in anime images and thus seem easily forgotten. If it's in the image, I'm confident the average user will naturally add them.) ( By native English, I meant that people leaving in non english speaking country have an harder time for these because it's not really something you learn in the educational system ) (Neither is most anything we talk about on the internet. -Yatchen)

Tenshi

Should be used for white wings, and/or halo.

Thigh Highs

For stocking above the knee. It shouldn't be use for pantyhose which totally cover the legs, thus not revealing skin at all.

Uniform

Include all sorts of uniform, except "nun" "waitress" "maid" "seifuku"

Vampire

For girls with vampire traits (pale skin, fangs, wings, etc.) showing signs of bloodlust, drinking blood, etc. Vampires who are so within a series should not have this tag unless you can tell they are vampires in the image. ( TO BE EDITED: I don't understand the last sentence ) (FIXED: Serious --> series, sorry)

Waitress

A servant in a cafe, or restaurant. Can be distinguished with the apron, which only protect the skirt contrary to the maid or a round serving tray. ( TO BE VERIFIED ) ( Merun approves )

Wand

For miko, mahou shoujo, and magic wands. Not for use with staffs.

Warrior

If it doesn't fit "ninja" "samurai" "valkyrie" or "soldier". Can be used for people wearing armor.

Waterfloat

Both for circular waterfloats or board waterfloats (kickboards).

Witch

Requires a witch-like appearance. Hat, broom, etc.
