Basic Information

Vocaloid is a vocal-synthesizing software that enables song writers to generate singing on their computer by typing in the lyrics and music notes of the composition. Simply put, it allows a person to sing a song through the computer.

The program is best known for its mascots, multiple characters in both male and female form. There are two versions of Vocaloid, an earlier and a later. Each Japanese Vocaloid is given an anime-type character with specifications on age, height, weight, and musical forte. The characters of the first three installments of the series (Miku, Rin, and Len) are created by illustrator KEI.

There is an unofficial manga based on the Vocaloid characters called Hatsune Mix, illustrated by KEI. There are also many fanmade doujinshi.

Yuki Miku and Rabbit Yukine

Since 2012, the costume design for Yuki Miku has been selected in an online illustration competition, each year with a different theme. Rabbit Yukine, the pet of Yuki Miku, was designed in a second competition in 2014 by nekosumi, before joining the costume design competition in 2015. For more information about the costume designs, visit the designers' pages below. There is also an official artist of the characters every year.
